Over the past fortnight we’ve been running a competition for Tribers, giving them the chance to win tea at the Ritz with Ruby Wax by sharing their mental health experiences. The response was overwhelming, and it wasn’t easy choosing those that will join Ruby for tea.
A selection of entries and the winners can be found here: blackdogtribe.com/competition.
Therapy can do wonders for those living with a mental health problem. This week Perseus has shared his story and has written an insightful post about how he experienced his therapy sessions. Perseus talks about CBT, holistic and alternative therapy, and how his therapist taught him ‘how to ground’, as well as about how society perhaps makes us judge ourselves.
May is Mental Health Month, and as usual we seek to find the latest news and research in the field. This week, a very promising breakthrough has been made in the form of the first ever blood test to help diagnose major depression in teens; a Norwegian study shows good romantic relationships are important for good mental health; and could a computer game help teenagers with depression?
Last week we launched the Black Dog Tribe YouTube Channel: BlackDogTribeTV. Check it out today to hear Dr Tim Anstiss talk about the origins of depression – and see Ruby give Shakira some serious competition when she dances to African music.
We had such an overwhelming response to our request for guest bloggers during Depression Awareness Week that we continued last week with a few more. Triber Hypatia wrote about stigma, sexuality and how hiding her feelings contributed to her depression; Neil wrote about the guilt attached to depression and how he feels he’s always being chased by a black dog; and Denis shared his story about opening up to his family about the condition and finding help in the darkest moments.
After winning a Mental Healthy Award earlier this year, Ruby has answered some questions from the site about her involvement in the field of mental health.
