Quetiapine what is it supposed to do?

Hi There
I suffered a breakdown around 2 months ago, psychiatrist put me on 300mg quetiapine which just makes me exhausted and seems to have little effect on my anxiety and depression. I just feel that I am in limbo, not feeling any better.
Where is all this going, what is supposed to be changing?
Anyone else got any experience of this?

my husband is on this also and he finds it helps him sleep but not much else - still gets the anxiety and exhaustion, not wanting to get up but psychiatrist said to persevere.

Re: Quetiapine what is it supposed to do?

it is classed as an anti psychotic but it does have quite a strong sedative effect. I am also on lithium for balancing my moods (avoiding depression mainly) and on diazepam as required for anxiety. Not one drug unfortunately does everything, and every drug has potential side effects, so it is usually trial and error to get it right. To me it sounds like you should be on more than one med. I recently had my quetiaine reduced as I was feeling overmedicated and told the pdoc that.

I was started on lithium first, then the quetiapine was added and then the diazepam as required was added. But I have to be really bad before I think of taking the diazepam as it really knocks me for six and means I am unable to drive.

I was on 300mg for a while to 'balance my moods'. It just made me tired and hungry. It made it seem to those on the outside that I was fine, but on the inside my brain was still trying just as hard to kill me, but I was too tired to fight because of the quetiapine! Diazepam was a lot quicker at working, but still knocks you out.

Hi all, hugh is on Venlafaxine, Quetiapine and now also Premagablin. The latter added as we told Psy.doc that the Q. didn't seem to be helping. Only just started the Prem.. so watch this space. Thanks for feedback.

Hope the cocktail helps, sometimes it takes a week or more to find out, best of luck to you

depends how and when used, taken at night it has helped me with sleep also, it can be taken earlier in the day and also as a slow release - neither of these worked for me as just felt exhausted all the time
