Dr Tim on exercise and depression

Many people with depression have noticed that becoming more physically active and taking more exercise can help to improve their mood. Research also shown a benefit in some people, but not all.

We don't know the mechanism why some people with depression experience some mood improvement when they start to exercise. The main theories are: A) Exercise acts as a diversion from negative thoughts; B) Exercise is part of 'behavioural activation' - just getting someone with depression up and about and out and doing something; C) Exercise increases social contact; D) Exercise leads to small feelings of mastery and achievement, which many depressed people lack; E) Exercise changes
